Giving Voice to Nature
Lynn Grimes is a retired public school teacher and visual artist. Having built her own off-the-grid home with her husband, she has spent her time connecting to the natural world through her art and her environs. Over 26 years of her teaching and art have focused on the natural world. It is no surprise then that her presentation will focus on the book "The Lost Words" by writer Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris.
Connecting readers to the natural world through language, the book was written in response to the removal of approximately 40 nature words from the Oxford Junior Dictionary for more contemporary words such as 'blog', 'celebrity' and 'attachment'. This picture book points to the essentiality of knowing nomenclature for the natural world in order to connect to it for the present and future generations.
