Music as a Practice: Finding Focus and Flow

Summary

Psychologists have long studied the flow state and the mental health benefits that accompany it. Finding methods that encourage this positive immersive experience help us to refine our focus, regain our calm and maximize our potential. Music has often been used as a tool for assisting people in finding their flow, but beyond the role as a pleasing auditory background lies the practice of making music itself. An ideal combination of challenge and reward, learning an instrument is the gateway to a lifetime of music, exploration and skill-building.

Music has a unique ability to relax and rejuvenate while improving memory, dexterity and uplifting our mental state. Promoting creativity, discipline and individual expression, learning an instrument helps us grow confidence and build skills. At Queen Bee Music Association we believe all these aspects are enhanced when music playing is done in groups. Queen Bee’s group classes, summer camps, and community jams offer a great avenue for students of any age to develop their musical ability while enhancing their focus and flow.
